Manchester United have already had a positive summer in the transfer market, and that could be set to continue with reports suggesting that the Reds are primed to beat La Liga giants Barcelona to the signing of
£17m-rated Netherlands World Cup star Daley Blind.
Both sides are keen on Ajax star Blind, whose stock rose immeasurably with a string of fine displays under new United boss Louis van Gaal for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
Deployed as a left wing-back at the World Cup, it is Blind’s versatility that will have attracted van Gaal, with the Ajax man able to cover big-money signing Luke Shaw as well as offering options in other positions.
United will have to bring in a left back this summer, despite the signing of Shaw, having allowed both Alexander Buttner and Patrice Evra to move on, to Dinamo Moscow and Juventus respectively.
New Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, meanwhile, is likely to want to bolster his defensive options as he looks to stamp his mark on the squad at the Nou Camp, with Blind capable of offering competition to the club’s established left back Jordi Alba.
