The 22-year-old was being heavily tipped to head to Old Trafford as new boss Louis Van Gaal, who deployed him alongside Ron Vlaar in his World Cup squad this summer, has been tasked with finding replacements for the departed Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

However, the belief that Van Gaal was targetting de Vrij was snuffed out on Sunday when local Dutch news agency RTV Rijnmond announced that Manchester United have “no interest” in moving for the Oranje international.

Reports are now suggesting that the young stopper will be on his way to the Italian capital this week for a cut down price of just €8.5m.

He will undergo a medical early this week before putting pen-to-paper on a five-year deal with the club.

United fans will now be wondering who the club will be moving for in terms of defensive reinforcements as the kick off for the new campaign lies just over a fortnight away.
