Last season’s Coppa Italia winners are interested in snapping up Fellaini, but have been quoted €25m by Manchester United, who at present are only open to a permanent sale of the Belgian.

Napoli have made United aware that they do not have that kind of money floating around and instead want to bring the 26-year-old on board in a season long loan, and they will also require United to pay a portion of his wages too.

United have so far maintained silence on the matter, but Napoli have made it clear that they will not be hanging around forever as they have a backup plan in the pipeline.

According to reports in Italy, the club are exploring the possibility of signing former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Lassana Diarra instead.

The 29-year-old currently at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow, but contact has already been established between Napoli and Diarra’s side.
