Man United are reportedly closing in on a deal to bring in AC Milan enforcer Nigel de Jong according to the Daily Express.

The Old Trafford side have sent chief executive Ed Woodward to London to meet De Jong’s representatives with the former Man City man said to be available for as little as £8m.

The Dutch international is said to be keen on teaming up with his former national team coach and the 29 year old can certainly provide a steely edge in the centre of the park.

Such a move will apparently then lead to van Gaal targeting AS Roma’s Kevin Strootman in January, who is currently sidelined with a long term injury.

Last term David Moyes looked to Marouane Fellaini to work in an unfamiliar holding role, a plan that backfired, and a move for a more suitable addition such as de Jong makes a great deal of sense.

De Jong is an experienced campaigner with the 29 year old having picked up domestic titles in both Holland and England and has almost 400 club appearances to his name as well as 76 national team caps.
