According to the Mirror, Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are all in line to make their return against the Baggies and ease the pressure on van Gaal.

Herrera has recovered quicker than expected after suffering a broken rib in the 2-1 victory over West Ham United on September 27 and could even start at the Hawthorns.

Meanwhile Carrick – who is yet to make an appearance this season – has been in rehabilitation after undergoing ankle surgery in July and should make the bench after coming through a training match unscathed.

Yet perhaps most importantly van Gaal will have two experienced defenders to call upon, with the form of Jones in particular having been missed as the Dutchman has experimented with a number of youth players at the back.

Youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair both earned their Red Devils debuts under the guidance of the 63-year-old and whilst their performances were encouraging, they cannot be relied upon too heavily just yet.

Jones has been one of the few to impress in a makeshift United defence since the departure of Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and the 22-year-old will be a welcome inclusion if fit.
