Ex-Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has hit back at claims that he left the squad in a poor and declining condition for his successor David Moyes, the Daily Mirror reports.

Ferguson, talking at a live event in London to promote the new paperback version of his book ‘My Autobiography’, is annoyed at accusations he left behind a poor, ageing squad for successor David Moyes in summer 2013.

“That’s an insult. We’d just won title by 11 points,” he said.

“We’d left young players there – Jones, Smalling, Welbeck. There were other players there – Van Persie, Vidic, Carrick and so on. Good players.

“[Chelsea striker Didier] Drogba is 36 and he scored at Old Trafford today. Van Persie is 32. My best signing was Carrington. The facilities there are first class.”
