Previous reports suggest that the Red Devils would have to fork out a whopping £75m to sign the Netherlands international, whose value has rocketed since his £15m move to the Stadio Olimpico just last season.

Strootman has spent much of his Roma career so far injured, but the Italian club are absolutely determined to keep hold of him amid strong interest from United manager Louis van Gaal.

The 24-year-old is a favourite of the Red Devils boss and is seemingly seen as his answer to the club’s midfield problems this season, though it seems unlikely that the club would cough up such a huge sum to sign him this winter.

Still, United are hot on his trail as the next transfer window approaches, with suggestions that van Gaal is ready to ditch his interest in other midfield targets such as Juventus’ Arturo Vidal to focus his efforts on bringing Strootman to Old Trafford this season.

Having spent so heavily on new players during the summer, it could be that United will splash the cash again this January.
