The Merseyside manager spent a huge amount to bring the Serbian star to Anfield over the summer, but so far he hasn’t seen much of a return. He is confident however, that the 20-year-old will come good; believing his performance against Bournemouth on Wednesday was a sign of things to come.

“He was brilliant. It has taken him a bit of time to get going and we have talked to him about being more aggressive in his game,” Rodgers said.

“In the 15 minutes before he got sent off against Basel, it was disappointing that he was sent off, because he started really well. That’s the Markovic that we know.

“Playing in that role [against Bournemouth] he was outstanding; he was defensively good and pressed the ball at almost all of the right times, so tactically he was very good.

“And with the ball his speed and movement was excellent. He has got good quality and is a good footballer.”

Markovic scored his first goal for the club in midweek, netting in the Capital One Cup and delighting his manager.

The Northern Irish boss was worried that his summer acquisition lacked the aggressive streak required to succeed in the Premier League, but after Wednesday’s performance he seems to have a renewed confidence in the youngster.

Liverpool have been struggling so far this season, finding themselves ninth in the Premier League and being unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions League during the group stages.

For one of Rodgers’ summer signings to start earning their stripes and coming good would therefore be a huge boost to their aspirations this campaign.
