The Spaniard has been transformed from a skinny youngster who was prone to match defining mistakes to one of the world’s best stoppers since his arrival at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old has admitted that he had to make a conscious decision to improve his physique in order to end his vulnerability at set pieces in the English game.

“I was like Captain America in one year!” he told the club’s official website.

“No, I still do the programme, although not as much as before. It is more of a reduced programme now but certainly I did a lot of gym work at the start and it did have a big impact.”

De Gea also could not speak English when he arrived at the Mancunian club, and has said that now that he can it has made a huge difference in the dressing room.

“I actually think the biggest impact is when you are in the dressing room,” the United number one added.

“You need it on the field as well, of course, but you need it in the dressing room. I think the fact that I have started to do interviews in English has really helped as well, it has helped me to learn more of the language as well.”

United next play Stoke City in what is sure to be a physical encounter at the Britannia Stadium. The Red Devils will be hoping to get the three points from the match in order to keep alive their hopes of joining the Premier League title race.
