The 26-year-old has been heavily linked to Manchester United over the last year, and with Dortmund struggling massively this season it has become more likely that he will leave the club. Jurgen Klopp’s team are second bottom of the German top flight as it currently stands.

“Are you looking for a headline?,” he said to Bild when asked if he was leaving in the summer. “No, I will keep it the way I’ve been doing it for seven years. I’ll let everything come to me and just look forward only to the start against Leverkusen and the second half of the season.”

A move this month is meant to be unlikely, but a transfer in the summer could well go ahead if the Red Devils make a large enough bid to tempt their Bundesliga counterparts. They are in need of a new centre-back, with their defence looking shaky this campaign when put under pressure.

The BVB captain has played 13 times during what has been a very disappointing season for him so far. He will be hoping that if he doesn’t move to the Old Trafford outfit then his current club will at least start to improve.
