The 33-year-old played in Marouane Fellaini with an inch-perfect pass for United’s first goal, before scoring the second in their emphatic 3-0 victory over their top four rivals, and his all round play suggested that he was getting back to his best after a series of injury problems.

Carrick has not played for the national side since facing Poland in October 2013, but has been in more recent squads – though his involvement has been cut short due to those same issues that have blighted his recent club career.

Despite being the wrong side of 30, and therefore a doubt for a future major tournament, the former West Ham midfielder may called upon as Arsenal pair Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are confirmed absentees for the matches against Lithuania and Italy later in the month, and they may not be the only ones.
