Louis van Gaal is set to call time on the 31 year old’s Old Trafford career as he plots a massive £150m spending spree.

The Daily Star states that chief executive Ed Woodward will seek a buyer for the former Arsenal man and given the Dutch international’s recurring injury concerns one imagines Man United will struggle to garner a fee anywhere near the £24m they paid for the player in 2012.

Van Persie’s £200k a week deal expires in the summer of 2016 and as such it makes sense to sell the player at the end of the current campaign to avoid the prospect of the player leaving on a free transfer deal.

The Daily Star claim that Edinson Cavani is considered a potential replacement for van Persie, the Uruguayan having scored goals for fun at Napoli ahead of his move to PSG.

Van Persie netted 30 goals in his debut season at Man United, helping Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to a Premier League title in the Scot’s final season in charge, but it’s fair to say that that experienced forward’s career has stuttered in the subsequent campaigns that have followed.
