Barcelona to solve defensive problem with signing of 34-year-old reliable veteran

Barcelona have had their troubles at right-back after Dani Alves left this past summer, and so the club are reportedly considering a move for Darijo Srna.

The 34-year-old has been with Shakhtar Donetsk for 13 years and has made over 500 appearances for the club as he has established his legacy with the Ukrainian side.

However, the Croatian full-back has reportedly asked if he can leave in January as the appeal of playing for Barcelona has proven too strong to turn down, according to Mundo Deportivo.

With Aleix Vidal struggling to establish himself since his move from Sevilla, albeit with an impressive performance in the Champions League this week potentially giving him a chance to cement his place in the side, Sergi Roberto has been asked to fill in at times too in what has been a problematic area of the pitch.

If Luis Enrique wants to be successful on various fronts this season though, he needs a reliable and experienced option and it appears as though the Catalan giants have focused in on Srna.

Although he isn’t the long-term solution to the problem given that he turns 35 next May, it seems like a sensible move on the face of it for Barca as it gives them short-term solidity with the flexibility to then go in search of an able replacement.

It remains to be seen if a deal goes through in January, but with Srna reportedly pushing for it to happen, it’s difficult to see him remain with Shakhtar.
