Belgian stopper wants another year in Spain.
Chelsea’s on loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has spelled out his desire to stay at Atletico Madrid for another season instead of return to London to play second fiddle to Petr Cech, Sky Sports reports.
The 21-year-old has been on loan with the Spanish giants for the past two years since joining Chelsea from Belgian club Racing Genk, and has been the undisputed number one since making the temporary switch.
Courtois was signed as a long term replacement for Cech but he has impressed during his two year stay in the Spanish capital, making nearly 100 appearances, and he has admitted that playing a high level of first team football is much more appealing than warming the bench for the Premier League side.
“I know Chelsea are a fair club. The board are smart people and know I need to play,” he said.
“I like the Chelsea project with young players very much.”
“In two or three years Chelsea will have a team to win everything.”
“I want to stay. I’d rather play in La Liga than be a substitute in the Premier League.”
“There’s a World Cup and I want to go. Here I will be able to play in the Champions League and there’s no better place to play than here. At Atletico I have progressed a lot.”
