Tottenham could face a struggle to sign long-term target Leandro Damiao as Atletico Madrid are understood to have shown a serious interest in the Brazilian.

Spurs have been linked with a number of strikers in this summer’s transfer window due to the poor form this season of Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, the club’s only two recognised forwards.

The misfiring pair saw Andre Villas-Boas’ side become over-reliant on Gareth Bale for goals, and the winger finished as the team’s top scorer with 26 goals as they narrowly missed out on a Champions League place for next year.

They now face a fight to keep their star player, with Real Madrid being widely tipped to be readying a big-money offer to land the Welshman this summer, and have been hoping to recruit some big names in a bid to keep him at White Hart Lane for at least one more season.

Damiao was linked with the club last year, and is thought to be a target again this summer, with Spurs considering offering around £30million to Brazilian club Internacional for the talented 23-year-old.

However, Atletico Madrid are also on the lookout for strikers after confirming yesterday that they’d sold their star goal scorer Radamel Falcao to big-spending Monaco for £50million.

Falcao was initially signed by the Spanish outfit from Porto for £34million, which was raised by the £38million sale of previous star striker Sergio Aguero to Manchester City, and they are prepared to spend big once again on replacing a key player.

Earlier today they were reported to be in for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who is also a target for rivals Real Madrid and would cost around the same as they sold Falcao for, and now it has emerged that they may look to outbid Tottenham for Damiao.

Diego Simeone’s side will make Internacional an improved offer of £35million, and will be confident in luring the Brazilian striker with the promise of Champions League football next season after they finished 3rd in La Liga, something Spurs cannot offer as they only managed to finish fifth in the Premier League.

Damiao has scored 82 goals in 147 games for Internacional and the interest in him is no surprise given his rapid rise in Brazilian football and his regular appearances in the senior national side.

Spurs would do well to sign him now, and may instead have to turn their attention to other targets such as Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke or Porto’s Jackson Martinez. David Villa is supposedly close to agreeing a move from Barcelona, though Villas-Boas would not want him as first choice due to his age and recent injury record.

Damiao should be a big success in Spain, and will become the second high-profile move from the Brazilian league to La Liga this summer following Santos star Neymar’s transfer to Barcelona.
