One of New York’s most iconic buildings is illuminated in honour of one of its most iconic sports teams.

The New York Cosmos may have disbanded almost 30 years ago, but to this day they are still quite possibly the most famous team in US soccer.

August 3rd will mark their grand return, as they face old foes the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in their NASL Fall Championship debut.

To commemorate one of the landmark occasions in recent US soccer history, the Cosmos have made sure as many people know of their return as possible – by lighting up the 22nd tallest building in the world classic Cosmos green.

On Thursday, New York’s world-famous Empire State Building changed spotlights on its upper decks to project a luminous green across the building’s top floors in an homage to the Cosmos’ signature colour.

As with anything Cosmos-related, Pele was of course in attendance. The Brazilian legend had the privilege of flipping the switch that got New York talking about the Cosmos again, for the first time in 28 years.
