The NBA Hall of Famer, who is now 41, announced his retirement from basketball in March after a 19 year long career. He was twice named as the league’s MVP.

In his latter years he played for the LA Lakers, but found court time cut short due to injuries.

He has been training with the Cosmos all week, and it is expected he will sign a deal to play for their B side this weekend. It would mean he would line up in the National Premier Soccer League – the third tier in the USA.

He has been a lifelong football fan and regular organises charity games and celebrity matches. His brother, Martin, was also a professional footballer, but he now does coaching work in Ottawa.
