Wingers two goals not enough for coach

James Virgili was on form in front of goal for Newcastle Jets game against a New South Wales select side,

He found the net twice in two minutes at the Jack McLaughlan Oval, ensuring his sides victory in the pre-season friendly.

The 21-year-old also scored twice in the pre-season friendly against local side Weston last Thursday, these heroics weren’t enough for Jets boss Gary Van Egmond.

Speaking to The Newcastle Herald, Egmond said there was still lots of room for improvement, he said: “It was good for James to score a double again, there still has to be more from his game as far as an end product.

“He does so many good things and that is the challenge. It was good that he got a couple of goals but he can be better.”

The Coach also praised Australian U20 Mitch Oxborrow, who set up both of Virgili’s goals: ” Mitch Oxborrow made the most of his chance. He is not a natural number 10 but he has a good pass, can see forward and has a natural awareness. I was really happy with him from that point of view.”

There is potential for Virgili to link up with target man Emile Heskey who had a successful first A-league season scoring 9 goals in 23 games.
