Liverpool’s hopes of signing their potential Luis Suarez replacement have been dashed as Diego Costa has confirmed he will stay with Atletico Madrid, amid the Reds’ interest according to ESPN.

The 24 year-old was subject to a £21.8million [his release clause] bid which had to be accepted by Atletico, but when it came to personal terms, Diego had asked for the Merseyside club to be patient insisting he was in no rush.

He was later quoted by Spanish paper AS saying : “I’m well here, I’m happy here.”

“As I’ve been in Argentina and Uruguay I’ve not heard anything about this [Liverpool bid]. I’m happy here, if the club [Atletico Madrid] want me to be here, I’m going to be here. I think that the coach [Diego Simeone] counts on all of us, not just me. He knows how important it is to maintain the squad, the fans know it as well.”

The Liga BBVA giants’ sporting director, Jose Luis Caminero, openly spoke about the club’s stance on potentially losing their second striker of the window [after Falcao went to AS Monaco for £50million], telling reporters : “Diego Costa is a very important player for Atletico; we value him very highly and we are convinced that this year he is going to score a lot of goals with Atletico. He is an idol for the fans.”

Despite losing their star Columbian forward, the Spanish side have managed to recruit global super star David Villa who has won almost every accomplishment a footballer can throughout his career – including a World Cup winners medal from 2010.
