Arsenal are plotting a move to sign Atletico Madrid fullback Juanfran, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Arsene Wenger is in the market for defensive additions this summer following a string of exits from the club, and has identified Spanish right-back Juanfran as a potential addition to his squad. The defender has been capped five times by Spain since 2012, and has been one of Atletico Madrid’s most consistent performers since he joined the club in 2011.

Arsenal are looking for competition for Bacary Sagna at right-back, as the defender has only a year to run on his current contact at the Emirates, and the club are undecided as to whether to offer him a new deal or let him walk next summer. Juanfran is one of a number of targets identified by Arsene Wenger this summer who they hope to bring in.

Following their 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the new Premier League season, is was evident that the Gunners need to strengthen defensively, especially in the case of injuries and suspensions, and have identified Juanfran as a potential cut-price addition. The club are also keeping tabs on Feyenoord defender Daryl Janmaat.

The club are keeping a close eye on Micah Richards’ situation at Manchester City. The England international has fallen out of favour at the club and has only two years to run on his deal at the Etihad, and could be available for the right price. The club are also tracking highly-rated PSV attacker Zakaria Bakkali.
