Manchester United have ruled out making a move for Real Madrid star and Arsenal target Mesut Ozil, according to talkSPORT.

The 24-year-old was said to be in talks with Arsenal after rumours emerged last night, but with United said to be his preferred option, it was thought that the Red Devils would look to the German international to aid their midfield problems.

However, with the Premier League champions seemingly making progress in their attempts to land Everton duo Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, Arsenal may be free to pursue the signing of Ozil before the transfer deadline.

The former Werder Bremen man has been a key player for Real Madrid since joining the club in 2010, but may not feature in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans this season following the big-money arrival of Gareth Bale from Tottenham.

This could see Arsenal capitalise, as they hope to bring in a late marquee signing to appease their fan-base, who have been frustrated at a lack of spending so far this summer.

United fans may be frustrated as well, however, with Ozil looking like the ideal candidate to replace the creativity in midfield of the recently-retired Paul Scholes.
