Though fellow Premier League side Man United are hoping to secure the 25 year old Blues star in a £20m deal it’s unlikely that Chelsea would sell to a domestic rival, which makes a La Liga return for Spanish international Mata all the more plausible.
Mata had entered talks with his Stamford Bridge employers but failed to secure the guarantees he was after and now the former Valencia man is actively seeking a West London exit.
Vicente Calderon boss Diego Simeone wants to bring in Mata to aid his side’s genuine La Liga title push and it’s a move that could offer the Chelsea man the regular first team football he is looking to secure ahead of the 2014 World Cup finals.
Juan Mata was a pivotal performer in each of his first two seasons at Chelsea, winning the club’s Player of the Year award in both campaigns, during which he helped the club to Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup successes but he has been unable to maintain those heights and Mourinho has opted to use Eden Hazard, Oscar, and in recent weeks, Willian ahead of the pint sized Spaniard.
