The Spanish side had been hoping to secure the future of young goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on a permanent basis at the end of the season, but the Blues have told them that he is not for sale, and now Diego Simeone has turned his attentions elsewhere as he looks to cover his squad in the wake of a big named departure this summer.
Simeone is aware that Diego Costa has been linked heavily with a move away, with Chelsea being mooted as his most likely destination, and he has reportedly targeted Lukaku as a like-for-like replacement.
The 20-year-old has struggled to fit into life at Stamford Bridge since arriving in 2012, and has spent the past two years on loan with West Bromwich Albion and Everton, where he is now.
Lukaku has impressed in both of his stints away from the club, but despite his terrific goalscoring record his future in west Lonson remains uncertain, and Simeone will be hoping to take advantage of his situation when the time comes to negotiate later in the year.
