The 24 year old has been a regular in van Gaal’s national team set-up but will miss the World Cup finals with a knee ligament injury but the veteran coach still wants to bring in the former PSV Eindhoven man to form part of his new look Man United midfield.

Louis van Gaal is expected to be unveiled as Man United’s permanent successor to David Moyes next week and will advise chief executive Ed Woodward to make an offer of around £32m for Strootman, who moved to the Stadio Olimpico in a £16m move last summer.

Man United had targeted Strootman prior to move to the Italian capital and the rangy midfielder enjoyed a strong campaign before suffering his season ending injury.

There could be a number of midfielders in the current Man United squad who are fearful of the axe with the likes of Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini and Shinji Kagawa all failing to deliver this season.
