The former Wales international was appointed to be the Red Devils’ interim manager following the recent sacking of previous boss David Moyes, and took charge of United’s final four Premier League games of the campaign.
However, the 40-year-old was never seriously considered for the full-time role due to his lack of experience as a top-level coach, although United officials are understood to have been desperate to keep hold of Giggs at the Theatre of Dreams in some capacity next season.
And now following face-to-face talks between Van Gaal, Giggs and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in a hotel in Noordwijk on Wednesday, it is set to be announced that the wide man will be the Dutchman’s No 2 at the club going forward with a view to the player then eventually taking over from the new Red Devils manager further down the line.
