It had been expected that the Red Devils would officially unveil the Dutchman as the successor to the recently sacked David Moyes in the Old Trafford dugout on Thursday.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the club’s current interim boss Ryan Giggs both flew to Holland on Wednesday to meet Van Gaal and discuss the Welshman’s role as his No 2 at the Theatre of Dreams next season.

However, both parties have since decided to delay Van Gaal’s official unveiling until after the Netherlands play their first World Cup warm-up fixture against Ecuador at the Amsterdam ArenA on Saturday afternoon so as not to distract the 62-year-old from his preparations for this summer’s tournament in South America,

Instead, it is now expected that an announcement will be made at some point early next week, with the former Ajax, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss said to be keen to fully concentrate on his role with the national team.
