The experienced Netherlands international trainer was finally confirmed in his new role by the Premier League giants on Monday following the sacking of previous boss David Moyes last month.

However, already the 62-year-old has made his assessment of the current group of players on display at the Theatre of Dreams, and it does not make pretty reading for a number of the club’s players, with Van Gaal said to only be confident of making use of four of them, goalkeeper David de Gea, front men Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney and recent new club-record purchase from Chelsea, wide man Juan Mata.

But the rest of United’s first-team squad now have just the start of this summer’s pre-season to impress the former Ajax, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss or else they will be not be part of his plans going forward in the north west.
