Defender is currently trying to renegotiate his current deal at the Stadio Olimpico.
Premier League giants Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal have now joined FC Barcelona in the race to sign £32m-rated AS Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia for next season, according to reports in the Daily Express.
The highly rated Morocco international is currently contracted to last season’s Serie A runners-up until June 2018, however, Benatia is said to now be demanding a one-year extension on that deal, as well as demanding that the club double his wages too.
And with the Romans’ head coach Rudi Garcia recently saying that while he did not want any of his squad which served him so well in the previous campaign leaving the Italian capital this summer, he also admitted that Roma could not afford an increase in their current wage bill in the next campaign.
Benatia, 27, managed to find the back of the net on five occasions in total in his 37 appearances in all competitions for his side last time out, all of which came in the top flight, with Roma looking at Southampton central defender Dejan Lovren as a possible replacement for the Moroccan.
