Defender is contracted to St Mary’s until 2018.
Chelsea have now joined the race for highly rated Southampton left-back Luke Shaw after the west London club made contact with the Saints to inquire about the England international’s availability this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mail.
It had been expected that Shaw would be joining Manchester United next season after the Red Devils, who have also been keeping close tabs on the 18-year-old of late, lodged a bid worth a whopping £27m with Southampton for their defensive starlet.
However, with no official announcement as yet of a deal having been agreed between the two clubs, the Blues have reportedly now stepped in to ascertain how the transfer is progressing.
The west Londoners themselves are also currently in the market for a new left back, with former England international set to leave Stamford Bridge at the start of July.
Chelsea have also been heavily linked of late with both Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno and Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis.
Meanwhile, Shaw himself has already rejected an approach from Premier League champions Manchester City, with the full back having previously indicated a desire to move to Old Trafford when he does leave St Mary’s.
