With Louis van Gaal’s Old Trafford side setting their sights on bit-part player Thomas Vermaelen it appears that the Gunners are willing to do business with Man United but only on the basis that they can conduct a player swap.

28 year old Belgian Vermaelen, who is Arsenal’s club captain, has barely had a look in over the past 18 months, starting just eight Premier League fixtures since March 2013, with Wenger keeping faith in his first choice central defensive pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, and as such the former Ajax man is probably considering his options.

Vermaelen is certainly too good a player to be wasting away on the Emirates Stadium bench and could be tempted to be part of van Gaal’s Man United revolution.

Wenger is said to be interested in England man Chris Smalling, who he could well see as a potential replacement for outgoing French veteran Bacary Sagna, with the right-back leaving to join Man City.

More surprising is the north London side’s apparent interest in Man United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who had a shocking season under David Moyes last term and quite where the 24 year old would fit into Arsenal’s first team set-up is hard to fathom.
