Los Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone, who led his club to their first Spanish league title since 1996 last term, is a firm fan of Lamela and believes his countryman is set for big things despite a difficult first season in the Premier League.
However, Simeone has brushed off Lamela’s difficult campaign off as a flash in the pan as he struggled to cope with the culture shock following his move from Roma last summer.
And now reports in Italy are suggesting that the Atleti boss is keen to bring him to the Spanish capital by making a €27m move for the 21-year-old.
Spurs are said to be cool on the bid, but Simeone is desperate to add his compatriot to his squad and will urge Atleti chiefs to up their offer should €27m not be enough to convince Tottenham to sell.
Lamela has interested clubs in Italy this summer, but sides from Serie A lack the financial backing to cause Tottenham to have genuine pause for thought over keeping the winger.
