Manchester United have made an £8m bid for AC Milan’s industrious midfielder Nigel de Jong, Goal reports.
Louis van Gaal worked very closely with the Dutchman during his stint in charge of the Netherlands, and he was a consistent selection during Holland’s impressive World Cup campaign this summer.
United are desperate for midfield enforcements before the 2014/15 season kicks off, and de Jong seems like a smart and affordable option.
de Jong is robust, combative, and provides consistent tackles and interceptions in the middle of the park. His incredible work-rate provides a platform from which the rest of the side can perform, and he’s far more mobile than the likes of Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick currently at Old Trafford.
The midfield battler has Premier League experience, winning the title with United’s bitter rivals Manchester City in the 2011/12 season, before he sealed a deal to Serie A giants AC Milan that summer.
Aged 29, de Jong is in his peak, and for just £8m, would likely provide a shrewd signing for United.
