Louis van Gaal is seemingly keen to strengthen his defence before the transfer window slams shut and given that he had to field youngster Tyler Blackett for Man United’s opening day defeat to Swansea City you can well see why the Dutchman would be looking to land a new signing or two.

The Old Trafford side have launched a £15m bid for Argentine defender Marcos Rojo, the 24 year old being able to fill both central and left-back roles, but the deal could prove complicated given the player’s joint ownership issues.

The Premier League side are also ready to offer £24m for AS Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia who could prove a very able addition.

The 27 year old had a superb debut season at the Stadio Olimpico as Rudi Garcia’s side secured a runners-up spot in Serie A.

The French born Moroccan international is a rock solid customer though one imagines AS Roma would not be looking to sell a player who only moved to the Italian capital a year ago.
