Manchester United have made an official approach to Cruzeiro over their 21-year-old midfielder Lucas Silva, who has been capped by Brazil at youth level.
Both Louis van Gaal’s side and Inter Milan are interested in the player, but the Red Devils are believed to be the favourites to secure a deal – according to reports in the Daily Mail.
Silva’s agent, Luis Rocha, is quoted in Super Esportes as saying: “There are not many details. I can confirm that I was approached by people linked to Manchester United and Inter Milan. There is an official proposal, we are waiting.”
United first became interested in Silva when he broke into Cruzeiro’s first team squad in 2012. The player has since made 38 appearances for the club, scoring three times.
Van Gaal is desperate for further reinforcements this summer after a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, and a frustrating summer in the transfer window.
The Dutchman has added Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo to his squad, but it seems clear that they will target further additions before the end of the month, when the window shuts.
United have also been linked with Real Madrid duo Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria – but have so far been frustrated.
