Manchester United have accepted an offer of £8 million for midfielder Tom Cleverley from Aston Villa, report the Telegraph, with the much maligned England international midfielder seemingly set to move on from Old Trafford.
Cleverley emerged through the academy at Old Trafford but, despite going on to make more than 50 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, he has become a scapegoat for fans who believe that the 25 year-old isn’t a good enough player to match the ambition of the club.
A neat and tidy, if unspectacular, central midfielder – Cleverley’s talents may well be better suited to a smaller club such as Aston Villa were the intense pressure of being under the Old Trafford microscope won’t be there – at least not to the same extent.
Villa are also looking to open contract talks with Fabian Delph, the midfielder who received a shock England call-up this week, with Paul Lambert potentially looking at a long-term central midfield partnership in Cleverley and Delph.
The Villains are looking to bounce back from a frustrating League Cup defeat at home to League One side Leyton Orient in midweek, despite a fine start to the Premier League season that has seen them take four points from two games, without having conceded a goal.
