The 22-year-old joined United as a promising youngster in 2009, signing from Italian giants Roma. He was very highly rated, but has failed to to ever make a Premier League appearance in his five year stay with the Red Devils.

Instead, he’s spent time on loan at Peterborough, Royal Antwerp and Charlton, and has now signed a contract with Romanian side CFR Cluj.

Petrucci has two caps for the Italy Under-19 side, but has clearly failed to live up to his early hype. At 22, Petrucci was never going to make the grade at Old Trafford, and it seems like a sensible move for both parties.

United have signed Daley Blind this summer who plays in Petrucci’s position, and also broke the British transfer record to bring in Angel di Maria to the club, who can also play in central midfield.

Petrucci will now try and reforge his career in Romania, hoping to one day earn a move back to an elite league.
