The Japanese international re-signed for Dortmund towards the end of the transfer window with the Bundesliga runners-up paying Manchester United £6.3 million for the 25 year old.

Kagawa spent two years at Old Trafford but struggled to hold down a place in the Red Devils first team. When he did start for United, he was often played out of position on the left wing with his favoured number 10 role being occupied by Wayne Rooney.

Kehl thinks it’s a relief for Kagawa to be at Westfalenstadion and backs Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp to help bring back the play-makers best form.

“You could see that it was a huge relief for Shinji Kagawa [to have left Manchester United for Dortmund],” the 34-year-old told Bild.

“It was not an easy situation for him at Manchester in the past few weeks.

“And then there were some comments from his coach that prompted him to return to Dortmund.

“He gets a lot of faith here. Everything that he’s been missing in the past few months, he’ll get back here again.”

Kagawa’s return to Dortmund will be an even bigger relief to Klopp now that Marco Reus has been ruled out for a month with an ankle injury.
