Vicente Calderon boss Diego Simeone is looking to bring in attacking support for summer signing Mario Mandzukic and is open to a move to re-sign Torres with the 30 year old currently out on loan at AC Milan.
Should the San Siro side elect to cancel the deal, with Torres having scored just once in ten Serie A fixtures, then Chelsea will apparently consider allowing the £50m signing to leave on a free transfer in January.
Such a possibility would be hard for the Spanish side to ignore though the experienced forward’s wage demands may prove something of a stumbling block.
Torres was something of a cult hero at Atletico Madrid before he left for Liverpool in the summer of 2007, having 91 goals for the club.
