The Dutchman has denied accusations that he is using the Serie A giants as a stepping stone to bigger clubs, and claims that he doesn’t see the team as an “intermediate point” in his career.

The 24-year-old has been linked to a move to the Red Devils due to his relationship with manager Louis van Gaal. It is thought that the midfielder wants to be reunited with the 63-year-old after their time working together in the Netherlands national team.

“I do not see Roma as an intermediate point in my career,” he told Voetbal International.

“Of course, a player who plays well here can showcase themselves sooner. Everyone wants to play with Real Madrid or Barcelona, but these big clubs are not scouting in Netherlands,” he added.

The Italian club currently sit in second place in Serie A, and are looking to challenge Juventus for the Scudetto after dropping out of the Champions League.
