The 27 year old will move to the Emirates Stadium according to respected Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda, a move that would hand the north London side a much needed steely presence in the centre of the park.
The former Real Mallorca man made 24 appearances last term as Diego Simeone’s side won the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final but has struggled for regular action with the likes of Gabi, Tiago and Raul Garcia ahead of Suarez in the Vicente Calderon pecking order.
Suarez will not be available for Champions League action but is still clearly a player Wenger wants to bring in this month as he pushes for a top four finish.
Wenger has been forced to use Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini as his chief holding/defensive midfield options and arguably neither is of sufficient quality in the role.
