The Reds confirmed the 25-year-old’s departure on Tuesday after the player requested a release to join the Mariners.

Adelaide chief executive Michael Petrillo thanked the crowd favourite for his time at the club.

“Fabio has been a great player for our club but more importantly also a great person and we understand the reasons behind his request to terminate his contract,” said Petrillo.

“Once we had this request we worked very hard and quickly to look for a suitable replacement and once we had secured the player we wanted, we agreed to release Fabio from the remainder of his contract.”

Ferreira featured in 54 matches for the Reds since joining the club at the beginning of the 2012/13 A-League season.

He has not featured in a game since injuring his hamstring against the Newcastle Jets on December 19.
