The Red Devils are long-time admirers of the German international, who has also been linked with Arsenal and other top clubs in recent times.

Still, United are determined to swoop for the 25-year-old, and will offer a mammoth £37m for his services to persuade Dortmund to sell the star player before the summer.

Hummels is widely expected to leave the club before long, but it may be that the Bundesliga strugglers won’t want to let him go in the middle of the season as they face a surprise fight with relegation.

Jurgen Klopp has previously won titles and reached the final of the Champions League with Dortmund, but the loss of other star players such as Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski has contributed to his team’s downfall.

Hummels could be another disappointing exit for the club as United continue to pursue him.
