The 30 year old Dutch international’s San Siro contract expires this summer and as yet the Italian giants are no nearer to tying down the former Man City man to a new deal.
Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal knows de Jong well from his time in charge of the Netherlands and is keen to land the tough tackler.
The chance to bring in a player of de Jong’s quality on a free transfer is one that Man United will not want to pass up though they can expect a fair amount of competition in pursuit of the AC Milan man.
Louis van Gaal strengthened his midfield over the summer, bringing in Daley Blind and Ander Herrara, but appears keen to bring in further additions.
De Jong left the Etihad Stadium for AC Milan back in August 2012 and one wonders if his past affiliation with United’s local rivals could provide an obstacle of sorts.
