The new Wenger? United boss plays down importance of winning trophy.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says winning the FA Cup is not as important as qualifying for the Champions League next season, according to Goal.com.
The Red Devils take on Arsenal in the FA Cup on Monday evening, and van Gaal’s words will be worryingly reminiscent of Arsene Wenger’s recent attitude to silverware versus finishing in the top four.
“When you win the FA Cup you are not in the Champions League, but you have won a trophy,” he said.
“For the players, that’s fantastic, and for the manager that’s fantastic, but our goal is to reach, in our first year together, a place in the Champions League.
“The Champions League is the highest level. To finish in the first four is a fantastic result I think, and for Manchester United even more so.”
