Louis van Gaal was not happy with the Argentinian.

Di Maria was dismissed against the Gunners after firstly being cautioned for diving, before he lost his head and grabbed the back of referee Michael Oliver’s shirt, prompting the official to send him off, and van Gaal acknowledged the stupidity of his midfielder’s actions.

“I’ve already spoken with him, he knows my opinion but also I have to see on the video.

“I think he’s touched the referee and that’s forbidden in every country, so he has no excuses,” the Dutchman explained.

While van Gaal suggested that he could defend Di Maria, he did try to justify why the Argentinian reacted to the first yellow in the way he did.

“To control emotion is not so easy in such a match and I know that in these kind of matches a red card is easy,” he added.

The red card incident crowned off an awful night for van Gaal, as not only have his side missed out on a Wembley semi-final, but the man to ensure that they went no further in the competition – Danny Welbeck – was reportedly forced out of Old Trafford by the former Netherlands coach at the start of the season.

Welbeck latched on to a dreadful back pass from Antonio Valencia in the second half, to put Arsenal back in front, after Wayne Rooney had quickly cancelled out Nacho Monreal’s first-half opener.
