Lorient secured three valuable points as they beat Stade Malherbe Caen to move away from the Ligue 1 relegation zone.
Les Merlus headed into this contest knowing that a defeat might see them inside the bottom three by the end of Saturday. However, a Jordan Ayew winner ensured that Lorient moved up to 15th-five points away from embattled Toulouse in 18th.
Lorient received an early boost when Caen centre-back Damien Da Silva was sent off for this reckless high foot.
However, Sylvain Ripoll’s side fell behind as returning Haitian forward Herve Bazile fired Caen into the lead just before the break. Moments later, however, the home side responded with Ayew playing through Raphael Gurreiro to fire home.
Both sides had their chances in the second half, but it was Lorient who secured the victory following the Ghana international’s superb effort from outside the box.
