The Metro claims that United are in pole position ahead of the Gunners to sign the 16-year-old after coming close bringing the defender to Old Trafford during the January transfer window when a £400k fee was agreed, but the move broke down because of a last minute hitch in regards to the paperwork and the player remained with Ligue 2 outfit.

Should this transfer go ahead, then it’s likely be one earmarked for the future as manager Louis van Gaal will surely target a more experienced central defender as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils have been strongly tipped to strengthen in that area in the summer and there were reports in The Independent on Thursday that a fee for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi had been agreed, although there has yet to be any confirmation from either club.
