The Argentina wideman has been heavily linked with a move away from Benfica this summer, and has been attracting considerable interest from the Premier League.
United could see the attacker as an upgrade on their current options [Express], particularly with Angel Di Maria having struggled at Old Trafford, while Brendan Rodgers is also understood to be keeping tabs on the 27-year-old Express.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola [via the Express], Gaitan is understood to favour a move to Old Trafford ahead of his other option, putting the Red Devils in pole position for his signature.
However, the Express also note that the player would also be prepared to see out his contract at Benfica, rather than moving this summer, creating some element of doubt about his future.
The player has a £38 million release clause, according to the Express, although it remains to be seen whether United would turn to Gaitan if they can secure another transfer target, with Arda Turan having been considered for an Old Trafford move [Mirror].
Should van Gaal move for Turan, Diego Simeone is understood to be considering Gaitan as a replacement [Express], meaning that the Argentine star may eschew a switch to the Premier League altogether.
