Grumpy Man United goalkeeper back early from loan spell

Like a separated couple awkwardly meeting in mediation to hammer out details of a divorce, Man United and Victor Valdes are back together for what may be a temporary reunion based on how things have played out this season.

According to the Metro, the former Barcelona goalkeeper will be returning to Old Trafford this week after his loan spell to Standard Liege of the Belgian Pro League was ended early over the club’s decision to give younger players a chance.

Valdes and Man United manager Louis van Gaal allegedly had a falling out this summer over the 34-year-old goalkeeper’s refusal to play for the Under-21 side. At the start of the season Valdes was not even issued a jersey number and barely participated in team activities for the first half of the season before being sent to Belgium in January.

Standard Liege won the Belgian Cup in a 2-1 win over Club Brugge with Valdes in goal.

Prior to joining Man United in 2015, Valdes helped Barcelona win six La Liga titles, three Champions League titles and five Zamora Trophies. He helped Spain win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
