Reports in France suggest that Arsenal have set their sights on Bayern Munich‘s Morocco defender Medhi Benatia and are primed to make an offer.

RMC reported on Sunday evening that the Gunners have made the North African their Number One defensive target this summer, and appear keen to tie the 29-year-old down to a deal as soon as possible, with a bid to be expected this week.

Benatia is coming off the back of a tricky season, having struggled with injuries and fitness during Pep Guardiola’s final campaign in Bavaria.

Indeed, he only managed 14 appearances in the Bundesliga this season—of which 11 were starts—and was only picked in Guardiola’s starting XI on two occasions on their run to the Champions League semi-final.

However, it Benatia can be rehabilitated, he could be a valuable asset for Arsene Wenger.

Having just turned 29, the Moroccan ought to have some of his best years ahead of him, and would surely represent an upgrade on the ageing Per Mertesacker.
